We'll be adding more free team building exercises as we can.

This takes time... why?

We don't want to just bring you any old team building activities ideas out of a book. We plan to bring you exercises from team building consultants and experts who develop and use the activities themselves.

That means getting permission to publish these exercises on our site. Please feel free to use these activities with your teams. However, we would ask that you do not copy or republish them without seeking permission from the acknowledged author.

Free Team Building Exercise No. 1

Summary: To work together to accomplish a given task as a team utilizing communication, collaboration skills, and team building skills.

Group size:18+ participants (groups of 6)

Supplies for each group:

  • 10 plastic cups of equal size (no handles)
  • One rubber band (must fit around the cup)
  • 6 pieces of string (each measuring approx. 3 feet long)

Prep Instructions - prior to session:

  1. Cut 6 pieces of string, into 3-foot long pieces for each group.
  2. Tie each piece of string to a rubber band (evenly spaced apart) - you will have a six-legged octopus.
  3. Make one of these octopuses for every six people/group.

In session set-up:

  • Give each group a stack of 10 cups and one of the 6-legged octopuses.
  • Place the cups on the table, scattered and upside down.

Instructions for Groups:

  1. Build a pyramid out of the cups with four on the bottom, three on the next level, then two, and one at the top.
  2. Team members may not touch the cups with their hands, or any other part of their bodies (even if a cup falls on the floor).
  3. Each person must hold onto one of the strings that is attached to the rubber band.
  4. The group can only use this rubber band octopus to pick up the cups and place them on top of each other (by pulling and releasing the strings on the rubber band to place around the cup).
  5. If there are less than six people on a team, select a team member to hold more than one string.

Facilitator Notes: As teams complete the task, you can pair groups up to form a larger pyramid using the cups from both teams and two of the rubber band octopuses. This becomes more challenging as two teams are attempting to maneuver in the same area, but still working together.

Discussion questions:

  • Did you have someone who stepped up as the leader or, was someone elected?
  • How did you complete the task given?
  • Where all ideas heard by all team members? If not, why? How did it make you feel?
  • Why was teamwork so important for this activity?
  • What skills did you use to make this activity successful?

Free Team Building Exercise No. 2

Description: Each team works together to build a 'house of cards' within 15 minutes, using only the resources available in the room and/or provided by the facilitator. A competitive event, each team races against the other teams to be 'first' to finish successfully. All team projects are judged by the facilitator (whose ruling is final and cannot be contested).

Project criteria include:

  • Efficient use of resources
  • Esthetic appeal
  • Height
  • Structural integrity
  • Presentation

Supplies (resources), one set per team:

  • 32 Index cards
  • 1 stack of Post-it notes (square)
  • 1 Box Paper clips
  • Tape
  • Colored markers


  1. Provide each team with their supplies.
  2. Each team has 15 minutes to build a house with the resources available within the room.
  3. Identify criteria for judging successful projects.
  4. As teams finish, chart their finish times on a flipchart.
  5. Once all teams have finished, have teams walk around with the judge (facilitator) to view the work of other teams. (No sabotage!!)
  6. At their own tables, have teams discuss the factors contributing/limiting to their success. Have them chart these factors on a flipchart. Each team must elect a spokesperson to present their findings to the rest of the class.
  7. Facilitator must award a rating for each project (use a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest, for each criterion). Highest possible score: 25

Discussion questions:

  • How was team leadership determined – appointed or assumed?
  • What unique contributions did each member offer? How did those contributions affect the successful outcome of the project?
  • How did the competitive nature of the event affect the quality of the project

Free Team Building Exercise No. 3

In this activity, the team is ‘bonded’ together with a rope/clingfilm. They have to work as a unit to move themselves from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible.


  • Rope or clingfilm. It should be long enough to bind together a group of up to 10 people.
  • Masking tape (to mark out Point A and Point B)
  • Timer

Space Required:  Large. Outdoors or indoors. Ensure that there are no obstacles in the designated area.

Group Size: 6 - 10 participants

Total Time: 30 - 40 minutes

  • 5 minutes to brief and setup

  • 15 - 25 minutes for the activity

  • 10 minutes to review and debrief

Running the Activity

  • Explain the activity: In this activity, team members are ‘bonded’ together and have to work as a unit to move themselves from Point A to Point B, in the fastest time possible. They have 3 attempts, and the aim is to improve their times with every attempt.
  • The team receives 3 minutes of planning time.
  • Get everyone to stand together, and tie the rope or clingfilm at waist height based on the average height of the group. The ‘bonding belt’ should be tight enough to prevent it from falling when the group moves. It should also be several layers, especially if you use clingfilm. 

  • Once the team is ‘bonded’, they can begin the activity. The facilitator will time how long it takes to complete the task. 

  • At the end of the activity, the team is informed of their time. Then they receive two more attempts to improve their time (with 3 minutes of planning before each round). You may need to check the tautness of the ‘bond’ in between the different rounds.


    •    The timer begins when the team leaves the Point A starting line and will be stopped once everyone crosses the line at Point B.


  • Ensure that there are no obstacles in the designated area.
  • The ‘bonding belt’ should be tight enough so that it does not fall when the group moves.
  • Remind the team that they should look out for their teammates’ safety while completing the activity.

  • How did the planning time help you execute the activity?

  • What problems did you encounter during the challenge?

  • Did you identify a leader? How was leadership demonstrated during the challenge?

  • How well did you communicate during the challenge?
  • How did the team act differently in the second and third rounds? Was the team satisfied with the level of improvement? 

  • What did you learn from the challenge?
